DOWNEY, Calif. — The city of Los Angeles is on high alert on the sixth day of protests over ICE activity, and President Trump sending in 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines.
Civil rights leaders on Wednesday said ICE agents showed up at two churches in Downey.
The pastor of Downey Memorial Church Al Lopez said at least five men dressed in plain clothes with faces covered and bullet-proof vests swarmed a man in the parking lot. The pastor said he came out of his office and tried to find out what was happening when one agent drew a weapon and refused to identify themselves.
It is unclear if the agents had a warrant signed by a judge.
“We said we don’t want this on our property. This gentleman just shouted, ‘the whole country is our property,’” Lopez said. “When someone tells that to you, with a weapon in their hands, that was a very clear message. As a man of faith, that is not allowed, and that is not correct and that goes against everything that our country stands for.”
In the past, immigration officials have stayed away from places like schools and churches, but in April, a federal judge, in a ruling, declined to block ICE agents from conducting arrests in places of worship.
At the time, the judge ruled that the legal challenge lacked evidence to prove that immigration officers were specifically targeting churches.
Under the Biden administration, agents could not make arrests in “sensitive locations” such as schools, hospitals and churches.
Democrats in Sacramento have proposed bill trying to protect some of these areas.
Overall, the White House announced it had arrested 330 undocumented immigrants since the ICE enforcement began last Friday. According to the Trump administration, 115 of those detained had a criminal history, but an overwhelming majority of them did not.
In a statement to Spectrum News, Tricia McLaughlin, DHS assistant secretary, said the events were false.
“ICE law enforcement was not even in Downy, CA [Wednesday]. This is just another false narrative to try and demonize our brave ICE law enforcement by claiming they were raiding a church.”
